About
I first dreamt of becoming a chef when I was 8 years old. Helping my mother by microwaving a jacket potato and putting my first meal together, the feeling of using the medium of food to serve those you love has always been my driving motivation.
I have experienced an incredible culinary journey, taking the opportunity to study a 4 years BA in Culinary Arts Management at University College Birmingham. During that time I spent one year at the 5 star One Aldwych Hotel in Covent Garden. I developed a strong passion for fine dining and loved everything about the professional kitchen. However, during Ramadan I felt a slight disconnect with this passion. During the day, I was serving expensive plates of food to high paying customers. But in the evening I was laying down the mats at my local Masjid with fruit and simple snacks. I came to the conclusion that while fine dining is amazing, food serves the greater purpose of bringing communities together. This was when the idea of Sliced began.
A platform which serves to educate, entertain and inspire Muslims through the medium of food. The meaning of ‘halal’ these days has become reduced by many, to neon lights outside chicken shops, but halal as a concept is so much greater than this.
As Muslims, we can connect to Allah through our better understanding and relationship with food. We can connect to social causes by understanding the history and meaning of food. We can connect more with one another to achieve great things, and it can start by sharing a plate of food.
